Glossary of terms compiled by Western Window.
Argon-filled- A glass option that improves the energy efficiency of the window by filling the air space inside the glass unit with argon gas.
 
Bay Window- A combination of three windows, generally a large center lite and two flankers returning to the wall at a 30 or 45 degree angle.
 
Bow Window- A combination of three or more windows joined together in a rounded or bow formation, with all sections being equal width.
 
Brickmould- Casing around the exterior of the window to give the window a richer appearance.
 
CFM- Cubic feet per minute. A unit of measure for the leakage of air through a closed window.
 
Condensation- Moisture on the interior of the window caused by a high level of moisture inside the home. Common in the winter when humidity levels exceed 35% inside the home.
 
Double glazing- Two panes of glass affixed in an insulated glass unit to increase energy efficiency.
 
Fixed Window- A non-operable window. Also, called picture window or transom.
 
Glazing bead- A vinyl extrusion that covers the seal of the glass unit.
 
Grid- Decorative dividers inside the insulated glass unit.
 
Head- The top of the window frame.
 
Insulating glass- The combination of two lites of glass with a sealed air space.
 
J-Channel- A vinyl accessory part that snaps onto the outside perimeter of the window frame for inserting siding, typically vinyl siding,
for finishing purposes.
 
Jamb- The sides of the window frame.
 
Lift rail- Located on the sash, the lift rail has a pull by which the sash is operated.
 
Low E glass- Low-emissivity glass has a metallic coating applied to the glass that resists the transfer of heat.
 
Mullion- The vertical or horizontal joints between windows joined together.
 
Net size- Actual width and height of the window, ½" less than the rough opening size.
 
R-Value- A measure of how much a material resists heat transfer. Inverse of U-Value.
 
Rail- The top and bottom or horizontal parts of a sash.
 
Rough opening- The framed opening in a wall to receive a new window.
 
Sash- The operable section of a window.
 
Sash balance- The hardware in a single hung window that holds the sash in place in the opened position.
 
Sill- The bottom of the window frame.
 
Single Hung- Operable window with the sash opening vertically from the bottom
 
Slider- Operable window with the vent opening horizontally from side to side.
 
Solar heat gain- The process of measuring the net heat gain through windows and other glazed areas, inside the home.
 
Stile- The sides or vertical parts of a sash.
 
Transom- A small window above another window or door.
 
U-Value- A measure of how much energy a material conducts. The lower the U-value, the better the insulating effect.
 
Vent- The operable portion of a window. Also, called sash.
